Trump Slams Pope Leo XIV as "Weak"

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a sharp attack on Pope Leo XIV, labeling the pontiff “weak” and suggesting he should be thankful for his rise to lead the Catholic Church, following mounting criticism of White House policies.

The dispute comes as Pope Leo intensifies his opposition to the recent U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran, initiated in late February. The pontiff condemned Trump’s warning to destroy Iranian civilization as “truly unacceptable,” describing it as “a threat against the entire people.” He has also urged “deep reflection” on U.S. migrant policies.

In a Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump — who had previously described Leo’s election last May as a “great honor” — reversed course, saying the Pope is “WEAK on CRIME, and terrible for Foreign Policy.” He added that he would rather see his “all MAGA” brother Louis in the role, referring to Louis Prevost, a U.S.-based figure known for his pro-Trump stance.

“Don’t want a Pope who criticizes the President of the United States because I’m doing exactly what I was elected, IN A LANDSLIDE, to do, setting Record Low Numbers in Crime, and creating the Greatest Stock Market in History,” Trump wrote.

Trump went further, claiming that Leo’s appointment was unexpected and politically motivated.

“Leo should be thankful because, as everyone knows, he was a shocking surprise,” he said, arguing the Pope was selected largely due to his American background and viewed as “the best way to deal with President Donald J. Trump.”

Speaking later aboard Air Force One, Trump reiterated his criticism, describing the Pope as “a liberal person” who does not prioritize law enforcement.

“I don’t think he’s doing a very good job... I’m not a big fan of Pope Leo.”

Meanwhile, Pope Leo has doubled down on calls for restraint and diplomacy. Responding to remarks by U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who encouraged Americans to pray for military victory “in the name of Jesus Christ,” the pontiff countered that God “does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war.”

In a post on X on Friday, Leo stressed that “God does not bless any conflict” and that “no cause can justify the shedding of innocent blood.” He echoed the message during a Vatican vigil the following day, urging prayers to “break the demonic cycle of evil.”
